chronic inflammatory connective tissue condition, autoimmune processes involving many tissues;effects young women usually but also children and males; skin, joints, serous surfaces (pleurisy, pericarditis, peritoneum), and kidney are usual targets; also more severe vasculitis occurs; usually low WBC and platelets and often hemolytic anemia occur as well as cerebral and behavior effects; best lab test is anti-double stranded DNA antibodies.
